Gwyneth Paltrow is, of course, an actress, perhaps best known for her roles on the big screen in Iron Man, Sliding Doors and Se7en, and on the small screen in Glee. Indeed, it was while filming the last in 2010 that she met her now-husband, Brad Falchuk. And the couple initially found an unusual approach to their union.
Paltrow began dating Falchuk in 2014, while she was going through a “conscious uncoupling” from former husband, musician Chris Martin. A year earlier, Falchuk, too, had begun divorce proceedings from his wife since 1994, Suzanne Bukinik. Four years later, Falchuk and Paltrow married in a small, private ceremony which took place in Long Island, in New York’s upmarket Hamptons region.
Apparently romance had first started to blossom between Paltrow and Falchuk on the set of Glee. Falchuk was a co-creator of the popular musical comedy, alongside Ryan Murphy. Meanwhile, Paltrow guest-starred as the character Holly Holiday – a substitute teacher – on the show between 2010 and 2011.
Paltrow’s role on Glee would not only win her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy, but it would also lead her to love with Falchuk. He later opened up about how he fell for the Goop founder in an interview published in the February 2020 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine.
Recalling the fledgling days of their relationship, Falchuk said of Paltrow, “She’s stunning and she’s charming and she’s completely disarming… We had similar enough backgrounds – a little bit Jewish, a little bit East Coast, her dad was a TV producer – and so we just sort of developed this really lovely friendship.”
But while Paltrow and Falchuk had clearly found a connection with one another, they were both still married to other people. Paltrow had wed the Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in 2003, and the couple then went on to have two children together: a son, Moses, and a daughter, Apple. They called time on their ten-year marriage in 2014 when they famously “consciously uncoupled.”
In the months that followed the announcement of Paltrow and Martin’s split, it was revealed that the actress was dating Falchuk. In 2013 the producer had filed for divorce from his wife Suzanne Bukinik. The couple had been an item for almost 20 years and had raised two children together: Isabella and Brody.
It wasn’t until April 2015 that Paltrow and Falchuk eventually went public with their romance. It was then that the couple stepped out together at the 50th birthday celebrations of the actor Robert Downey Jr. Falchuk was reportedly seen placing a protective hand on Paltrow’s back as she maneuvered through the crowd.
The couple confirmed their relationship further in September 2015 when Paltrow attended the launch of Falchuk’s show Scream Queens alongside the producer. He, in turn, shared a snap of the couple at the premiere on his Instagram account. In the caption, Falchuk wrote, “My date and I #screamqueens.”
Taking their romance to the next step, in 2017 Falchuk proposed to Paltrow during a trip to the Italian region of Umbria. The couple subsequently announced their engagement in the second edition Goop Magazine in January 2018. On the cover of the publication, Paltrow and Falchuk posed together in a black-and-white snap.
Inside Goop Magazine Paltrow gave readers a rare insight into her romance with Falchuk. The actress said, “For the first time, I feel like I’m in an adult relationship that is sometimes very uncomfortable – because he sort of demands a certain level of intimacy and communication that I haven’t been held to before.”
Continuing, Paltrow revealed that her relationship with Falchuk had taught her some things about herself, particularly how she struggled to open up. She explained, “What came up in the first couple of years of our relationship was how incapable I was in this realm – how I feared intimacy and communication.”
However, Paltrow added that she had “tried to accept how complex romantic love can be.” So, speaking of her decision to marry Falchuk, she explained, “I have decided to give it a go again, not only because I believe I have found the man I was meant to be with, but because I have accepted the soul-stretching, pattern-breaking opportunities that (terrifyingly) are made possible by intimacy.”
Paltrow and Falchuk tied the knot later that year, at an intimate ceremony at the actress’s home in The Hamptons in September 2018. Among the celebrities to attend the New York wedding were Robert Downey Jr., Jerry Seinfeld and Cameron Diaz. Paltrow married Falchuk in a Valentino couture gown, before swapping into a Stella McCartney playsuit for the reception.
Paltrow later gushed about her fairytale wedding in an interview with breakfast TV show Good Morning America in 2019. Revealing that it was a close-knit affair, she said, “We had a very small wedding… We both have really old friends from elementary school and high school and that was really the bulk of our friends that were there.”
However, while Paltrow and Falchuk enjoyed a picture-perfect wedding, some aspects of their romance have raised eyebrows over the years. For one, there’s Paltrow’s continuing bond with her ex-husband Martin, who is often seen hanging out with his former wife and her new spouse.
In fact, after Paltrow and Falchuk tied the knot, Martin had accompanied the happy couple on their honeymoon. In 2019 Paltrow appeared on TV talk show Live With Kelly and Ryan and told hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest of her unconventional honeymoon. She disclosed, “So, my new husband and his children, my children, my ex-husband, our best family friends [all went]… It was a very modern honeymoon.”
And the couple’s friendship with Paltrow’s ex wasn’t a new development. Not long after Falchuk had asked Paltrow to marry him back in November 2017 the newly-engaged couple had brunch with Martin. Paltrow then marked the occasion by sharing a snap of her ex and her fiancé on Instagram. Alongside the picture, the actress wrote, “Sunday brunch #modernfamily.”
Meanwhile, in the summer of 2019 Paltrow and Falchuk were pictured hanging out with Martin and his girlfriend, the actress Dakota Johnson on a Hamptons beach. Martin and Johnson had been dating since 2017. And usually, the sight of four adults spending time together would not be considered out of the ordinary.
However, it seemed that the shared history between Paltrow and Martin was the cause of some confusion among fans. Some people were excited by their evolving relationship and ability to remain friends. But on the other hand, there were those who simply couldn’t understand why you’d want to hang out with an ex and their new partner.
Paltrow addressed the media storm caused by the photographs in her interview with Harper’s Bazaar in 2020. And while she admitted that maintaining a relationship with Martin wasn’t always easy, she believed it was the right thing to do for the sake of their children, Apple and Moses, who were by that time teenagers.
Speaking to the magazine, Paltrow said of her relationship with Martin, “It’s not like there’s a finish line: ‘Oh, we consciously uncoupled; we’re done.’ It’s a lifelong commitment to constantly reinvent your relationship with your ex, which you do presumably because you have children together. I don’t see a reason to do it if you don’t have children together. Some people do.”
Paltrow added, “But I think we put all the hard work in at the beginning. I would say very rarely is it difficult now. We’ve learned how to communicate with each other. We love each other. We laugh. We have the best of each other. It’s really nice. It makes you feel like you don’t have to lose.”
And remaining friends with Martin wasn’t the only thing that Paltrow did to ensure the well-being of her children. In fact, as her relationship progressed with Falchuk it was important to her that Apple and Moses were on board. And in 2018 Paltrow was happy to report that her engagement with Falchuk had her kids’ blessing.
During an appearance on Good Morning America, Paltrow revealed that Apple and Moses were “excited” about her relationship with Falchuk. She added, “It’s a very happy time, I have to say… I’m super-lucky in that I have these incredible relationships in my life. To feel that love and support from our community is really, really special.”
However, even though Apple and Moses approved of their mother’s marriage to Falchuk, Paltrow was careful not to overwhelm them with changes. For that reason, the newlyweds decided against moving in with each other following their nuptials in 2018. Instead, they continued living apart.
Paltrow shared the revelation that she and Falchuk had not moved in together in an interview with The Sunday Times in June 2019. While speaking with the British newspaper, the actress revealed that her husband stayed with her at her place just four days of the week. The remaining three Falchuk spent at his home.
Apparently, Paltrow and Falchuk’s unconventional approach to marriage was approved of by the actress’s “intimacy coach” Michaela Boehm. Paltrow told The Sunday Times that living apart helped to keep her relationship fresh by providing some “polarity.” And that, in turn, was helping them to smoothly blend their families together.
As with many of the lifestyle choices that Paltrow has made over the years, the fact that she and Falchuk only lived together part-time was the source of some controversy. Among the critics of the couple’s way of living was Meghan McCain, who described it as “rich people stuff” during a 2019 appearance on TV talk show The View. McCain added, “What if you can’t afford two houses? Come on you, guys.”
But McCain’s The View co-star Whoopi Goldberg agreed with Paltrow and Falchuk’s approach. She said, “I love it. I’ve done it. I don’t want anybody in my house. You can come and cook, you can come and hang out, you can sleep (over) and then you gotta go home… I don’t want your drawers on the bathroom floor!”
During her chat with The Sunday Times, Paltrow also got candid about the struggles of being a stepmom to Falchuk’s two children Brody and Isabella. She said, “I mean sometimes that piece gets complicated when there are two teenage girls. If you’re not drinking the same Kool-Aid, it can be tough.”
But despite the difficulties that come with blending two families, Paltrow felt confident that everyone was on the same page. She explained, “I do think though, at the end of the day, everyone wants the same thing, which is to feel love and be accepted.” So for both Paltrow and Falchuk, it was key that they took things slowly.
In August 2019 Falchuk also opened up about married life with Paltrow, particularly on how it affected their children. He told WSJ Magazine, “Divorce is terrible, even when it’s the right thing to do. And it’s really hard on kids.” However, Falchuk also announced that he’d be moving in with Paltrow the following month – a year after they’d wed.
Falchuk revealed, “I’m moving in September. We’ve just done it slowly… Come September, we’re all gonna Brady Bunch it up, and it’ll be great.” Meanwhile, in an interview with InStyle magazine from September 2019, Paltrow added, “Now we’re moving in together this month. I adore my husband.”
Explaining why she and Falchuk had waited so long to move in with one another, Paltrow added, “Married life has been really good. We took a year to let everybody [in the family] take it in and let the dust settle.” She said of her husband, “He pushes me in the best ways. I really like being married. It’s fun.”
However, even after Paltrow and Falchuk moved in with each other, the fact that they had lived apart was still a talking point. When the actress appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in October 2019, the TV talk show host couldn’t resist asking his guest about the unusual set-up she and her husband had enjoyed in the first year of their marriage.
Once again, Paltrow calmly explained why she and Falchuk had put off cohabiting. She said, “I think because we each have two teenage children, whom we love very much, we were just trying to be mindful and give them a little space and not move too quickly. Now we’re merged and it’s great.”
With that cleared up, Kimmel tried to gain an insight into how things went when Paltrow and Falchuk finally did move in together. The host asked, “Did he get to keep any of his stuff? Or is it all your stuff? Because I would imagine your stuff is better than his stuff.” Joking, Paltrow replied, “It is,” before confirming, “Yeah, he got to keep some of his stuff.”
Paltrow gave a further dispatch from her married life with Falchuk in her interview with Harper’s Bazaar in January 2020. When asked about them living together, the actress joked, “So our sex life is over.” However, she did admit that she was still adjusting to cohabiting.
On this matter, Paltrow explained that living apart from Falchuk had helped “with preserving mystery.” So she said that she and her husband were working hard on keeping the spark now that they resided under the one roof. Paltrow said, “This is something I’m trying to remain aware of now as we merge together.”
