As a British royal, Princess Beatrice of York is no stranger to media attention. She’s actually ninth in line to the throne of Britain, with her younger sister Princess Eugenie being next. And in September 2019 the spotlight fell on her again as she made an exciting announcement regarding her personal life.

Beatrice isn’t actually considered to be a “working royal.” Though she has the title of princess, in everyday life she uses the name Beatrice York. She’s currently the Vice President of Partnerships and Strategy at the software firm Afiniti, but prior to that she had a job interning with movie company Sony Pictures.

But it’s Beatrice’s royal life that seems to most interest people. And with the prospect of her wedding coming up, the young princess is certain to grab more headlines soon enough. So, to mark the occasion, here’s a look back at Beatrice’s life in photos that are not often seen.

The princess was born in August 1988, the first child of Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, who himself is the second son of the Queen. Beatrice’s name came as something of a surprise at the time, without a single person placing a bet on it with bookmaker William Hill. It’s not entirely unheard of for a royal, though. She does, after all, share the name with the fifth daughter of Queen Victoria.

A few months on from her birth, Beatrice was christened in the same manner that all royal babies are. She was baptized at the Chapel Royal, which is located in St. James’s Palace. This, of course, is the same place where Beatrice’s ancestor Queen Victoria was married to Prince Albert. To mark her christening, Beatrice was dressed in a traditional royal christening gown which dates back to the 19th century.

In 1990 the one-year-old Beatrice was first introduced to her younger sibling, Princess Eugenie. By that point in time, of course, the marriage of the girls’ parents was falling apart, supposedly because Prince Andrew’s job as a naval officer was keeping him from home. The following year, rumors spread about affairs on Sarah Ferguson’s part.

Ultimately, Beatrice’s mom and dad didn’t stay together, and they separated when the princess was only three years old. It was a scandalous situation at the time, exacerbated by Ferguson being photographed topless on a beach with another man. Later, having been apart for four years, Andrew and Sarah officially divorced.

It was all undoubtedly a strange situation for a little child to deal with. However, Prince Andrew and Ferguson ended up sharing custody of their two children. And in a 2005 interview with Tatler – granted just before she turned 17 – Beatrice claimed that her family had actually gotten closer due to the divorce.

Beatrice had quite a lot to say in that interview, which also featured her mother. She told Tatler, “I wouldn’t trade my life for anyone else’s. I love being who I am and feel very happy with that.” And regarding her royal existence, she said, “A lot of it is quite normal. Scooting around the supermarket with a shopping trolley and things like that.”

Beatrice also attempted to describe her mom and dad, saying, “With one parent being a prince and the other being an amazing sort of…” Before finishing her sentence, however, her mother cut in with, “Commoner?” Sarah Ferguson was indeed a commoner when she married into royalty, but Beatrice replied with, “Amazing sort of businesswoman, is what I was going to say.”

Beatrice attended St. George’s School, an independent establishment, between the years 2000 and 2007. She must have done quite well there, as during her last year she was reportedly voted to become Head Girl. She was also in the school’s choir, at one point even singing for her royal grandmother during a service.

When Beatrice was seven years old, it was discovered that she had the learning difficulty dyslexia. As a result of the disorder, she later ended up postponing her GCSE examinations by a year. But when she took the next set of exams – known as the A-Levels – she ended up getting good grades in Drama, History and Film Studies.

Beatrice did, in fact, have an interest in drama and acting. And in 2009 she actually appeared in a movie produced by her mother, a flick called The Young Victoria. Although her role was only as an extra, it nonetheless made her the first royal to show up in film that hadn’t been a documentary.

Beatrice would become an advocate for dyslexia awareness as she got older, with her mother speaking about the issue, too. In a 2007 interview Ferguson told Bazaar magazine that both of her daughters were very clever. As she put it, “Even with dyslexia, Beatrice got As in history and classics.”

After Beatrice left school, she started doing some unpaid work. First off, she was a sales assistant at a department store, before joining the press department of the British Foreign Office. But news of some un-royal behavior also made it into the papers. For one thing, her boyfriend at the time was Paolo Liuzzo – a boy who’d been convicted for assault. And he’d also, at one time, been linked to a teenager’s death in the wake of a drunken fight.

In 2006 Sarah Ferguson released a statement in defense of her daughter’s relationship. It said, “As any parent will know, the most important element in a relationship with your child is trust. We all have our own journeys and have to learn our way, but Beatrice is a sensible girl, soon to be eighteen, with many friends including Paolo. We must trust her judgement.”

In fact, Ferguson went above and beyond for her daughter and Liuzzo. She and Prince Andrew actually asked the young man to join them on a skiing trip at one point. In the end, though, the relationship didn’t last. But Beatrice still never seemed to be far away from controversial behavior.

In 2007 Beatrice was spotted partying with pop star Lily Allen, getting drunk and not leaving Allen’s house until the wee hours. But more problems arose when her mother Ferguson was outed for accepting cash for interviews and access to her ex-husband. This caused major embarrassment to the royal family.

Beatrice’s personal fashion choices have sometimes been publicly called into question, as well. In 2011, when Prince William married Kate Middleton in a high-profile wedding, the 22-year-old princess wore a bizarre-looking beige fascinator. Many people found the headwear rather hilarious, and it even inspired a whole host of Photoshopped memes.

Beatrice discussed the fashion faux pas to Grazia magazine later that same year. She said, “It’s an incredible response to a hat, really. I’m glad it provoked so much conversation.” It transpired she was going to auction it off, with all the money going to the charities Children in Crisis and Unicef.

Beatrice wrote on the auction page for the fascinator, “I’ve been amazed by the amount of attention the hat has attracted. It’s a wonderful opportunity to raise as much money as possible for two fantastic charities. I hope whoever wins the auction has as much fun with the hat as I have.” In the end, it went for $131,000.

Despite Beatrice’s high profile, she doesn’t actually give interviews all that often. However, come 2016 she was speaking about her dyslexia to the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre, an organization she’s a patron of. She talked about first being diagnosed with the condition and how she had come to see it as a “gift.”

Beatrice said, “I remember one of my earliest memories was sitting in front of a Beatrix Potter book and the illustrations were so beautiful but the words meant nothing. I was put into specialist classes and I remember the teacher looking at me and saying, ‘Why do you keep looking at me? The words are not written on my face.’”

Despite all that, Beatrice described her dyslexia as “the greatest thing that ever happened to me.” She went on, “I have to learn how to cope with it every day. I still spell things wrong and I still have to read every email a million times to make sure it’s correct. But I think this all makes me more methodical.” That seemed to be an excellent way of looking at things.

In 2018 there were two important royal weddings for Beatrice to attend. One was, of course, the union of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle. And the other was the marriage of her sister Eugenie to businessman Jack Brooksbank. For this occasion, Beatrice served as the maid of honor to her younger sibling.

Just before the wedding, Beatrice and Eugenie gave a joint interview to Vogue. Here, they touched on how they’d been under a spotlight right from birth. Beatrice considered, “We are young women trying to build careers and have personal lives, and we’re also princesses and doing all of this in the public eye.”

Eugenie shared that the media pressure sometimes upset both the sisters. She said, “There was a horrible article that had been written about Beatrice and she got really upset. We were just about to step out and she had a bit of a wobble and cried. I was looking after her. And then about an hour later, I had a wobble and started crying and Bea was there for me.”

Beatrice and Eugenie also talked about the normal sisterly fights they got into. Beatrice said, “One of the biggest fights we ever had was about a pair of Converse trainers. We have the same size feet and both of us had identical pairs. One pair got trashed and the other sister may have swapped them.”

The two young princesses concluded the Vogue article with an attempt to assert their normalcy. Eugenie said, “Nowadays it’s so easy to recoil when you see a perfect image on Instagram – but it’s important that it’s real. We’re real.” Beatrice agreed and told the pair’s interviewer, “We’re very real.”

In September 2019 an exciting announcement came from the royal family. Beatrice was engaged to be married. Her intended husband was a property magnate named Edoardo “Edo” Mapelli Mozzi, the descendent of Italian aristocrats. The pair had kept their relationship as private as possible, and had barely even been photographed together.

The proposal alone had been a lavish affair. Edo supposedly began planning it four months in advance, getting Mayfair designer Shaun Leane to devise the engagement ring. Reportedly, he popped the question to Beatrice while the couple were embarking on a romantic beach holiday in the Italian village of Positano.

Beatrice and her new fiancee released a sweet joint statement at the time. It read, “We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together. We share so many similar interests and values, and we know that this will stand us in great stead for the years ahead, full of love and happiness.”

Even though Beatrice and Edo had known each other before, they apparently had only properly reconnected at Eugenie’s wedding. That’s according to royal expert Juliet Rieden, who spoke to Nine News Australia. She said, “They knew each other in the past and obviously met again at the wedding and, for the past year, have been dating and now they are getting married.”

Riden went on, “[Edo is] a property tycoon, he is very wealthy. Princess Beatrice will be in very good hands there. Mum and dad are going to be very impressed, she had a very impressive 2.5-carat Botswana diamond ring which Edo helped design.” And she added that previously Beatrice had had “a long, ten-year relationship with Dave Clark that finished in 2016.”

And it seems that Riden’s assertion was proved to be correct. Indeed, Ferguson and Prince Andrew released a statement saying, “We are the lucky parents of a wonderful daughter who has found her love and companion in a completely devoted friend and loyal young man. We send them every good wish for a wonderful family future.”

An anonymous insider spoke to People about how Beatrice’s wedding might compare to her younger sister’s. They said, “Beatrice and Eugenie are super close, but they are very different. Beatrice is more serious and Eugenie is the outgoing extrovert, she’s so bubbly and fun. Beatrice is more reserved and discreet.”

The unnamed source went on, “She holds back more. She is very polite, very well-educated but more formal and quiet in her personality. So I think it will be a very different wedding to Eugenie’s.” At the moment, it’s rumored that Beatrice might not go for a wedding which could be considered traditional by royal standards.

When Beatrice does marry Edo, it will mark a first for the current crop of royals. That’s to say, she will become the first blood princess to become a stepmother upon marriage. Edo has a child, Christopher, from a previous relationship with architect Dara Huang. Huang’s statement on the marriage was, “I wish the best for Edo and Beatrice and look forward to uniting our families.”

According to a source who spoke to People in October 2019, “Edo is easily one of the best dads. He is so involved, he is so committed to this little boy, and Beatrice is already showing that she’s a fantastic step-mummy already. They’ve been on family vacations together already. They are really happy, there’s no better person they could have for a step-mummy.”

All in all, Beatrice has done a lot with her life so far. As well as charitable work, she’s climbed Mont Blanc and Mount Etna, while also running a half-marathon in Laos. The princess also works on the board of Outward Bound, which offers U.K. youngsters adventure in the great outdoors. But now, it seems that she’s ready for her next adventure – marriage.
