These Royal Family Photos Reveal The Striking Similarities Between Baby Archie And Prince Harry

Back in May 2019 Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had their first child together, a boy who they named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. At the time they said they didn’t know who he looked most like. But now that Archie is a little older, it’s starting to become pretty clear who the little cutie resembles.

He’s only been in the world for over a year, but already Archie has perhaps been to more places and met more people than some adults have in a lifetime. That’s not exactly a surprise given he’s a baby born into money – and royalty at that! And when he was born, he was seventh in line to the throne, as well as the first British royal born with African-American ancestry. Although his parents opted not to give him a royal title.

Meghan and Harry were thrilled to have a new baby. And two days after Archie’s birth the royal couple announced his name and introduced him to the world via a photoshoot. Meghan said, “He has the sweetest temperament, he’s really calm. He’s been the dream.” Plus Harry joked, “I don’t know who he gets that from.”

Archie was baptized in July 2019. He of course wouldn’t have known it at the time, but he was taking part in a historic royal tradition. Because all of the Queen’s great-grandchildren are christened while wearing a particular gown, a replica of the dress Queen Victoria had created for the baptism of her own first-born daughter.

And a few months later in September Archie was whisked off on a tour of Africa by his parents. It was his first official outing, and one of his “engagements” was meeting Archbishop Desmond Tutu in Cape Town. Archie won’t remember it of course, but there were lots of photos of the event. Who knew that people like taking snaps of babies?

Then Archie became involved in another piece of royal history come 2020, when his parents decided to step down from royal duties and move away from Britain. Controversial, some might say. And in an Instagram statement about the issue the pair wrote that they still wanted to “raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born.”

Harry’s childhood was similar in some ways, but since he was the second-born son of a royal it was also different. Yes, he was born Prince Henry Charles Albert David in September 1984, the son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. But he wasn’t the heir to the throne – his older brother Prince William was. Such is (royal) life.

Even though both her kids were in the spotlight, Princess Diana was determined to give them as ordinary a life as possible. And as her marriage to Prince Charles broke down, she took the young boys to theme parks, cinemas and other places kids their age would normally go. But she also ensured they understood their place in society by taking them to homeless shelters.

In 2017 Harry appeared in a documentary called Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. And he remembered, “My mother cherished those moments of privacy and being able to be that mother rather than the Princess of Wales. She made the decision that no matter what, despite all the difficulties of growing up in that limelight and on that stage, she was going to ensure that both of us had as normal life as possible.”

But then in August 1997 Harry and his brother suffered a terrible blow. Yes, Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris, an event which shocked the world. The royal family kept the two boys away from the media until the funeral, where Harry and William walked behind their mother’s coffin.

Understandably, Harry was hit hard by the death of his mother. Because he seemed to go off the rails a little as a teenager. At 16 he admitted to his father that he’d been taking drugs, and Prince Charles responded by sending him to rehab. Plus there was an incident where he wore a Nazi uniform to a fancy dress party, displaying pretty poor judgement. And before you say “we were all young once,” take into account that this happened shortly before Holocaust memorial day.

In 2017 Harry opened up about his mental health struggles since Diana’s death. He told Telegraph journalist Bryony Gordon, “I can safely say that losing my mum at the age of 12, and therefore shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years, has had a quite serious effect on not only my personal life but my work as well.” But as the years went by, he had gotten help.

You see, Harry was very close to his mother, and just as his son looks like him, the young prince bore a strong resemblance to her. Because while Diana may not have had the famous bright red hair, she and Harry were alike in other ways. Yes, they had similar features as well as the same cheeky smile. So here’s wondering if Archie might inherit the latter from his dad, too.

Harry’s red hair has been a point of contention for a while. Because conspiracy theorists claim that as neither Diana or Charles have it, that’s proof that Harry is really the son of James Hewitt, a redhead Diana once had an affair with. But in fact Harry got his ginger locks from Diana’s side of the family. He looks a lot like Earl Spencer, his maternal uncle.

As if the Spencer connection wasn’t evidence enough that he’s not the son of Hewitt, Harry actually shares several characteristics with his grandmother the Queen, as well. In 2020 Cosmopolitan magazine pointed out, “Both the Queen and Harry have a similar mouth and nose …plus their ‘guys, I’m so over all of you’ expressions.”

And Harry doesn’t look dissimilar to his grandfather Prince Philip either. It’s a lesser-known fact that Philip also rocked ginger hair and a beard when he was younger. Plus the two men have similar facial features, including their mouths, and both are fairly tall. Harry is 6’2″ in height and Philip is 6’0″.

Everyone’s excited to see who the new generation of royals will look like, too. So far the Spencers would appear to have very strong genes. It’s been pointed out time and time again that Princess Charlotte looks a lot like Diana’s niece – Earl Spencer’s daughter, Lady Kitty Spencer. And Kitty grew up to be a model. So it seems Charlotte might not ever have to worry about her looks.

But Charlotte also shares some features with the grandmother she never knew, Diana. Because pics taken of Diana at the same age make the resemblance obvious. And apparently the two have a similar personality as well. Like Diana, Charlotte has dancing as a favorite hobby.

Plus Prince George also loves dancing the way his grandmother did. William revealed this back in 2018, telling a group of teens at a royal reception, “George is doing dancing as well, he loves it. My mother always used to dance, she loved dancing.” George may have even inherited his blonde hair from Princess Di. But who knows for sure.

Still, eldest son George looks similar to his father first and foremost. And the royal family leans into this. Because at Charlotte’s christening ceremony in 2015 the two-year-old George was dressed in a red and white shirt and shorts ensemble. “So what?” You say. Well, this was the same thing William had worn to meet his new baby brother in 1984.

And now Archie is beginning to look like his father, too. Back when the little royal was born, Meghan told reporters at the photoshoot that she and Harry were “still trying to figure” which of them Archie resembled. At that time, only a few days after his birth, it was of course difficult to tell.

Harry said to the media, “Everyone says babies change so much over two weeks. We’re basically monitoring how the changing process happens over this next month really. His looks are changing every single day so who knows.” But now those two weeks have long since passed, and Archie’s looks are starting to settle.

Not long before Archie flew out to Africa with his parents in 2019, an anonymous source spoke to People magazine about him. “He’s a happy baby,” they said. “He has lovely, puffy little legs and tufts of reddish hair. He’s really adorable.” So Archie had inherited the ginger hair, too.

While we’re on the subject, you could even argue that Harry’s hair makes him quite the flag bearer for other gingers. In 2018 Jacky Colliss Harvey, author of Red: A History of the Redhead told the USA Today paper, “All of us redheads in the United Kingdom are wildly excited about the possibility of a red-haired baby – fingers crossed!” This was of course before Archie was born.

But USA Today also talked to an evolutionary biologist, John H. McDonald from the University of Delaware. And he said he believed the chances of Harry and Meghan having a baby with red hair were slim, most likely around ten percent. Why? Well, there is actually quite a bit of science behind this.

Because red hair is actually rare – although you might not know it based on the number of celebrity redheads. In fact, only two percent of people in the entire world have natural red hair. But in the United Kingdom four percent of citizens have it, and Scotland and Ireland have much higher numbers.

And as Meghan didn’t have red hair, that reduced the chances of a red-haired baby being born. However, Harvey told USA Today, “If her ancestors are Scottish or Irish then the red-hair gene runs much higher in those areas and also in pockets in Russia and Switzerland. Recessive [red] genes can crop up decades after they were last seen.”

Harry and Meghan tend to hang out with other celebrities, and in August 2019 Ellen DeGeneres spilled all about who the baby looked more like. “I got to hold little Archie, the baby…He looks just like Harry, and he had more hair than I did at the time,” she told her audience on The Ellen Show.

Also the media agreed with Ellen absolutely. As the Africa tour got underway, Elle magazine said, “One inevitable conclusion is just how much four-month-old Archie looks like a young Prince Harry. As Markle cradled Archie before and during the Sussex’s meeting with the Archbishop, it felt reminiscent of Princess Diana holding Harry.”

Plus people following the tour on Twitter were absolutely thrilled. One person enthusiastically wrote, “This just melts my heart and soul. It’s Harry’s twin! What a #cutiepatootie. My day has been made y’all!” Another wrote, “Duchess Meghan really gave birth to Prince Harry’s twin. Baby Archie has her eyes though.”

Just as Archie was starting playgroup for the first time in October 2019, a mother called Angela got to meet the Duke and Duchess. And she said she’d asked whether Archie was a redhead, and “Harry said he definitely is, you can see it in his eyebrows.” Plus Angela’s daughter got to joke with Harry about their shared ginger hair.

Harry confirmed it again, according to sources, at a playgroup meeting the next month. An anonymous person told the Daily Express tabloid, “Archie had a fantastic time. He was crawling around and was particularly taken with two other red-haired babies. The Duke said: ‘Gingers stick together!’”

But sadly Archie’s red hair led to a resurgence of the old claims that Harry is in fact James Hewitt’s secret son. Yet the Daily Star tabloid spoke to a hair expert, ironically named Spencer Stevenson, about what it all meant and how the ginger hair didn’t prove anything.

Stevenson told the newspaper, “Archie appears to be brewing a nice head of ginger hair just like his father Harry. The Ginger gene is a strong unforgiving gene and just goes to show considering Meghan’s dark coloring couldn’t overpower the ginger gene.” He added, “In a matter of four to six months we will really know what color he is.”

And Stevenson also said that although “it’s understandable why it seems suspicious to some people,” hair loss patterns in the two men proved that James Hewitt couldn’t be Harry’s father. Plus Hewitt himself has always said that he didn’t even start his affair with Diana until Harry was already a toddler.

When Archie reached age one, the resemblance between him and his father became even more pronounced. And for that particular celebration Meghan released a new video of her and the little boy. She read him his favorite book, Duck! Rabbit! while Harry filmed it all. It was to help raise money for Save the Children.

The video was posted to the “Save with Stories” Instagram, and royal family fans commented aplenty about Archie’s appearance. “Archie is a sweetie pie! He sure looks like his Daddy! And I see he has some new teeth,” one person wrote. Another said, “Happy Birthday! He looks like his papa!”

As well as raising money for charity, the adorable video granted viewers an insight into the relationship between Harry and his son. And although it didn’t show his face, Harry could be heard making duck sounds behind the camera for Archie. Plus at the end of the clip, Archie cutely babbled, “dada.”

Harry and Meghan do generally try to keep Archie out of the spotlight. But often they share little tidbits about how he’s doing. In August 2020 Harry told rugby player Ellery Hanley that, “what I need is a few, like, mini rugby balls that I can then get Archie involved with the game… I need to get him playing some Rugby League.”

And in the same interview Harry revealed what nickname he and Meghan had for Archie. He said, “Our little man is our no. 1 priority but then our work after that is the second priority, and we’re just doing everything we can to try and play our part in trying to make the world a better place.” So it’ll be interesting to see what Archie looks like as he gets older.
