On Oscars night, all eyes are fixed firmly on the famous faces in attendance. And when it came to the 92nd Academy Awards, one such star was Keanu Reeves. But the John Wick actor apparently couldn’t care that millions were watching him like a hawk. After all, he seemed to engage in a flirtatious conversation with another celebrity – and it certainly got people’s tongues wagging.
But as well as Reeves, a few other celebrities got fans talking at the 2020 Oscars. Brad Pitt, for instance, finally took home an Academy Award for his acting, having been nominated numerous times over the decades. And in his acceptance speech, he called the achievement “incredible” and an “honor of honors.”
Elsewhere, Laura Dern won a statuette for her supporting performance in Marriage Story. Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, meanwhile, won his first Best Actor trophy for his work in the villain-centric film. And Renée Zellweger earned the title of the year’s Best Actress for her portrayal of screen legend Judy Garland.
Still, many considered the big winner of the night to be Parasite, the South Korean dark comedy film that nabbed Best Picture. In doing so, it became the first movie to take home the award which hadn’t been performed in English. Yet aside from all these worthy winners on the night, some fans couldn’t get over one particular interaction caught on camera. Keanu Reeves, it seems, had been flirting with another A-lister.
As soon as he arrived at the Oscars on February 9, 2020, Keanu Reeves grabbed people’s attention. The actor wasn’t nominated on the big night, but his appearance at the ceremony proved his return to Hollywood prominence. Indeed, his leading role in the John Wick movie franchise has thrust him back into the spotlight.
Of course, everyone knew why Reeves was in attendance at the ceremony. Ahead of the big night, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the names of the actors who would present awards. Among the list – which included Shia LeBeouf, Sigourney Weaver and Steve Martin – was the Matrix star.
As soon as he hit the red carpet, though, Reeves was making a splash on Oscars night. At first, the attention he received had little to do with his flirtatious exchange with a fellow movie star. Instead, fans took notice of the actor’s special choice of date for the ceremony. As it happened, he had taken his mom Patricia Taylor along.
It made sense for Reeves to bring Taylor as his plus-one. After all, his mother had herself once been involved with show business. At one point or another, she’d worked both as a performer and as a costume designer. In fact, it was her latter expertise that had taken English-born Taylor to Lebanon, where she met Reeves’ Hawaiian father Samuel. They welcomed their now-famous son in 1964.
Fast forward to 2020, and fans were loving the fact that the grown-up Reeves was bringing his mother along to the Oscars to share in the evening. Many, in fact, took to Twitter to praise the actor’s sweet walk down the red carpet. One person wrote, “Keanu Reeves took his momma to the Oscars. Can this man get any more adorably perfect?”
Another fan admitted to “melting” upon seeing Reeves and Taylor at the ceremony, also deeming it their “favorite moment so far.” Someone else went so far as to call the actor and his date “the best thing you’ll see today.” But it wasn’t just the pair themselves who earned praise – Taylor’s outfit of choice garnered positive reviews, too.
One Twitter user declared that the Academy should “give [Taylor] an Oscar” for her stunning look. This was an outfit which revolved around a crisp white tuxedo. Someone else shared a picture of the mother-son duo and wrote, “Keanu Reeves with a lovely youthful vibrant lady at the Oscars 2020 – his mom.”
But in spite of all the praise that the stylish duo received, Reeves and Taylor did appear to have one hiccup as they made for the entrance of Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. According to Metro, the pair had an awkward introduction to someone – and it was caught on camera. This was to Australian star Rebel Wilson.
Wilson had stopped in for an interview with E! correspondent Ryan Seacrest. In the midst of their chat, Reeves and Taylor strolled up for their segment with the entertainment TV host. As Seacrest changed over his interviewees, they introduced themselves to each other. Wilson and Reeves grasped hands without incident.
However, it quickly became clear to viewers that Wilson and Taylor had a bit of miscommunication in their greeting. You see, the Australian actress extended her hand for another shake, but the costume designer didn’t see. So, rather than engaging in a friendly handshake, Reeves’ mom nodded her head in recognition.
So, Wilson reciprocated the action, just as Taylor realized that the actress had tried to take her hand. At that point, she put forth her hand for a shake, but Wilson was shepherded away instead. So, Reeves’s mother was left hanging in a very unfortunate exchange that was all caught on camera.
Thankfully, things went a whole lot smoother once Reeves and Taylor made their way into the Dolby Theatre. The actor eventually appeared onstage to present the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The nominees for the gong were Knives Out, Marriage Story, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Parasite.
Best Picture winner Parasite also nabbed the award for Best Original Screenplay, as presented by Reeves. But the movie’s success wasn’t the only headline drawn from this segment of the show. A lot of people noticed that the John Wick star had some serious flirtatious energy with his co-presenter Diane Keaton.
It wasn’t the first time that Reeves and Keaton had showed off their chemistry onscreen – although the first time it happened was for a movie. The duo starred in the 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give, a romcom helmed by writer-director Nancy Meyers. For her leading role, Keaton won a Golden Globe award and was nominated for an Academy Award, too.
The flick saw Keaton’s character Erica embroiled in an unexpected love triangle. On one side was Harry, a playboy in his 60s played by Jack Nicholson. On the other stood Julian, a younger doctor played by Reeves who ends up treating Harry after a heart attack. At that point in the film, Harry is seeing Erica’s daughter Marin, who was played by Amanda Peet.
But Harry’s heart attack throws everyone for a loop. Julian prescribes bed rest for Harry, which means he has to stick around at his girlfriend’s mother’s house for a bit longer than expected. So, as he starts to fall for Keaton’s Erica, so, too, does the ER doctor who sent him to relax with her in the first place.
In 2003 Roger Ebert wrote a review of the film. In his words, “Only in the Hamptons would the doctor be handsome Julian Mercer, who is instantly smitten by the sexy older woman.” But as the esteemed film critic also noted, the love triangle plot isn’t necessarily as formulaic as it might seem from the outside.
Ebert wrote, “How, why and whether Harry and Julian do or don’t become Erica’s lovers is entirely a matter of sitcom accounting, and need not concern us. What’s intriguing about the movie is what they say in between. Meyers gives them more and smarter dialogue than we expect in a romantic comedy.”
Still, Something’s Gotta Give’s viewers will know right away who Keaton’s character will end up with at the end of the flick. And in spite of the film’s realistic dialogue, Ebert opined that Reeves’s relationship with Keaton’s character didn’t make much sense. Especially – spoiler alert – considering that he lets her go in the end.
As Ebert put it, “It must be said that a young man who would propose marriage to a woman 25 years his senior and fly to Paris with her, plan marriage, and yet immediately surrender her to his rival without a struggle… has desires that are all too easily contained. There is a sexual mystery surrounding the whole situation.”
Come 2020, however, and fans of the film may now feel totally vindicated by their belief in the relationship of Reeves and Keaton’s characters. After all, as the stars started delivering their lines during their presentation of the Best Original Screenplay award, something became patently clear. They still shared tremendous chemistry.
Keaton and Reeves’ flirty exchange got underway with the famous actress saying, “It’s been a long time since you and I made that movie Something’s Gotta Give. Remember me?” Reeves then enthusiastically replied to the Oscar winner, “Yeah, you were amazing!” With that, she cheekily retorted with, “You were amazing!”
With all the attention now firmly upon the former co-stars, Reeves seemingly made an attempt to bring the focus of their words back to film – and consequently away from flirting. So, he continued the conversation. He said, “I’ll never forget reading that Nancy Meyers screenplay for the first time.”
To that, Keaton hysterically responded, “Yeah, no, yeah, no.” The audience started to laugh after that, but the actress pressed on. She continued, “Obviously me neither. There was a lot of crying in there. Lots of laughing and crying and, well, we had some really good, well, let’s be frank. It was good times.”
As they spoke, Keaton and Reeves continued to catch each other’s gaze and break out in tiny smiles. But the Point Break actor slipped into a full-on grin when he joked with his former co-star about her choice in romantic partner. Well, her partner in Something’s Gotta Give, at least.
Reeves beamed as he reiterated, “It was amazing! It was a good time.” Then, he mentioned Keaton’s chosen partner in the film. He said, “You and Jack!” And the actress came back with a hilarious response, perhaps showing her support for her former character’s alternate romance with Reeves’ on-screen persona. She flatly replied, “I wouldn’t go that far.”
After that, the crowd roared with laughter once again as Keaton and Reeves prepared to do their duty as Oscars presenters. But the actress almost jumped the gun when she reached for the envelope that revealed the winner. She forgot that neither she nor her co-presenter had listed the nominees. She must have been distracted by all of the flirting.
Keaton lifted the envelope and said, “Okay, I’m going to open this for you.” But Reeves stopped her in the nick of time, clearly entertained as he replied, “No, not yet!” Always cool and collected, the actress said, “Oh no, not yet that’s what I mean.” Then, they recited the list of nominees.
With that, it was finally Keaton’s time to rip open the envelope to reveal the Best Original Screenplay winner. But the actress juggled it in her hands for a bit before almost dropping the thing. Her former co-star stepped in to open the parcel, revealing that Parasite had won the statuette.
In any other circumstance, the crowd may have honed in on the fact that Keaton nearly fumbled the envelope or opened it prematurely. However, viewers could only comment on the fact that she and Reeves had a serious rapport. Of course, this could be seen in Something’s Gotta Give – but now also in real life, nearly 20 years later.
One Twitter user simply posted what everyone was thinking. They wrote, “Wow, so much chemistry between Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves.” Another person admitted that the former co-stars’ presenting had inspired a new hobby. They joked, “Watching Diane Keaton swoon over Keanu Reeves is my new favorite thing.”
Some hoped that Keaton’s reunion with Reeves would inspire more casting directors to put the pair on-screen together again. One Twitter user argued, “Going back to the most important thing that’s happened tonight. If there were more Diane Keaton/Keanu Reeves movies we could start calling them Dayenu.”
Fans weren’t the only ones to laud the Keaton-Reeves reunion. Rolling Stone magazine’s Phoebe Reilly and Jenna Scherer called their award presentation one of the best moments of the night. They explained, “For many, the delightful pairing was a corrective 17 years in the making: the preferred ending to that movie.”
Even Something’s Gotta Give writer and director Nancy Meyers seemed to have a change of heart about the movie’s ending. Nancy Meyers took to Instagram to share a photo of the presenting pair, highlighting Keaton and Reeves’s obvious bond once more. She captioned the image, “Whoa. Maybe they did end up together.”
For now, there’s no word of a Something’s Gotta Give sequel – or alternative ending – being in the works. In the meantime, Keaton has a 2020 film release to which she can look forward. She will star in Love, Weddings & Other Disasters alongside the likes of Jeremy Irons, Diego Boneta and Jesse McCartney.
Reeves has a much busier release schedule in the year to come. He voiced a cameo in 2020’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. The year will also see him reprising his famous role in Bill & Ted Face the Music, before he stars in a fourth installment of The Matrix in 2021.
